Thoughts on decorating with fake flowers and greenery. Is it a no no or not?

sometimes filler is needed in a room...like above cabinets and on top of desks and such. I leaning toward thinking that the use of fake plants and artificial flowers is a a big no no in decorating. Do you still use fake or only real flowers and plants? I have cats and can not use real plants.

I have cats and a dog and I have real plants. Granted there are types you shouldn't have, particularly if they like to chew on things but for the most part, I haven't had any issues.

As for above cabinets and desks (I am assuming where there is little to no light?) I would use fake plants - if they looked real - none of those cheap restaurant ones because that jsut looks...well FAKE haha. Seriously, you can get some nice ones but they are pricey!

I do recommend getting some real plans though! They will make a difference and make a house feel warmer - even fake plants miss out on that a little bit I think!

Cheers
Reply:Fake plants can do the trick if they are tasteful but hold back on the fake flowers.
Reply:They have come a long way with fake. As long as they don't get fuzzy they'll be okay. Live plants wouldn't probably survive. Good luck!
Reply:You can't use real plants because of your cats so as long as the cats will leave the fake flowers alomne you should go for it. There are many silk flowers now that look almost better than real flowers. I have a few fake orchids that people always believe are real and they even have to touch the flowers before they believe me.
Reply:Oprah may not like it but I can't grow a darn thing, and I do nice arrangements.

Try to stay away from obvious fakes, too-bright colors, flowers that don't bloom at the same time, cheap silk flowers do look nasty. Don't even think of plastic ones.

I have a philodendron on top of the overmantle in the dining room it looks fine, but in other rooms I've used dried flowers or curly willow or pussy willows or branches to keep it natural but still give a sense of nature.
Reply:I personally prefer real plants, since they look a bit better, filter the air, and help maintain humidity levels.

If you're worried about toxicity, there are plenty of plants that look nice and are pet-safe. African violets, spider plants, wandering jew, jade plants, and most ferns (EXCEPT asparagus fern!) are all good choices. Cacti work pretty well too (we used to use a barrier of cacti to keep inquisitive cats away from other houseplants). It may help to keep a small pot of catnip or cat grass where the cats can indulge their vegetable cravings, instead of tasting new and exotic varieties.

On the other hand, if you're worried about the cats attacking the plants just for the heck of it, or if you don't have a green thumb, fake plants have come a long way. I'd agree that, particularly on top of cabinets, etc., fake plants would be just fine. Just dust them once in a while. If you're leery of putting fake plants out on display at lower levels, where people can actually see them and pet them, you might consider dried arrangements instead. Most craft stores sell a number of quite sculptural dried grasses, seedpods, etc.
Reply:If the fake flowers or plants are quality and look as though they are real I say it is fine. They make some now you can't tell if they are fake or real.Don't use the cheap ones that look fake.
Reply:I think fake plants look exactly that: fake. They can also fade over time if exposed to the sun, which makes them look worse. I suppose that, if you really wanted plants and paid a lot for some very realistic-looking ones, you could go with fake plants. But, I won't have them in my house.
Reply:Hi, fake flowers and greenery can work well and look lovely.

Try to keep the arrangements as natural as possible, and maybe stick to just one or two colours!

Dont put too many together in one arrangement, make use of the fake greenery!

Buy the best quality you can afford, they do some fabulous fake flowers now, even in the supermarkets!

good luck and enjoy! =^..^=
Reply:I have 2 cats and 2 dogs and I have real plants all over the place. We do have some poisonous ones, but we keep them in rooms or up where the cats/dogs cant get to them. I also have two that I didnt know were poisonous until recently and all of the animals have stayed far away from those two, they're smarter than we think sometimes.

Fake plants can look nice, if they're of good quality. And I think high up ontop of cabinets would be fine because no one would get close enough to notice all that much.

The only thing I have heard about fake plants is having them in your entrance way is a no no, it represents death, apparently. I don't know if you buy that sorta stuff, but if you do now you know!
