Any ideas on removing hot glue from fabric?

I attached some artificial flowers to a "red hat" that is similar to straw, but it is more like a manmade facric than straw. Any ideas? The hat belongs to someone else. She didn't realize I was going to hot glue the flowers on it. I can't return the hat to her with all the glue on the hat band area. I was able to remove the flowers but the glue lingers on......

Perhaps instead of trying to remove the glue, you could remove and replace the ribbon. I don't know of any method of removing hot glue that doesn't leave some type of mark. Replacing a ribbon would be simpler -- the hardest part will be to match the original, but there are so many colours and widths available your chances are fairly good on finding an acceptable match.
Reply:I wouldnt use nail varnish remover to remove hot glue...I dont believe it would do much. As someone (cabinet maker) who occasionally has use for hot glue I would suggest using near boiling water and some damn thick gloves....water proof gardening gloves maybe?

Try to rinse the glue out. I cant say I have dealt with this problem before - I am only commenting on the basis of what I know about hot glue.
Reply:No not nail polish remover! It can change the dye color!

I would try a hair dryer on a low heat setting and a butter knife to soften the glue and gently try to scrape it off.

If nothing else, a sincere apology and a gift certificate for a new hat would I'm sure be appreciated by your friend.
Reply:Put it in the freezer. For a few hours at least, maybe even overnight. Let the glue get as hard, dry, and cold as possible, and it may chip or peel/break off.

The biggest obstacle is going to be the grain of the ribbon, where the glue may have actually settled in between the threads. Getting it all off, so there is no discoloration, may be impossible. You may want to consider trying to replace the ribbon instead.
Reply:try nail polish remover
Reply:I would suggest you use an iron. Don't use the iron directly on the hat and the glue, as you may burn the hat and make a huge mess. Lay a cloth over the glue on the hat and take an iron over the cloth. This will melt the glue without burning the hat and then you can work on wiping off the glue.
